Electrical engineering is entering its most transformative era in decades. While the last few decades were dominated by advancements in software, IT, and telecommunications, the coming years will be defined by energy innovation. As the global demand for reliable, sustainable, and intelligent power systems accelerates, electrical engineers will be at the heart of this transition.

Over the next 5–10 years, job opportunities for electrical engineers will expand rapidly—but only for those who understand where the market is heading. Here are the key trends reshaping the industry and creating new career pathways for electrical engineers.

 Current and future state of the electrical engineering job market

This post provides you an analysis of the current and future state of the electrical engineering job market. Saudi Arabia is already leading the way with massive solar projects such as:

  • Sakaka PV Project (405 MW) – The first utility-scale solar plant in KSA.
  • Sudair Solar Project (1.5 GW) – One of the largest in the world.

Future solar energy Projects in KSA

The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) is continuing to tender new solar PV projects as part of the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP). The kingdom is targeting an annual tendering of 20 GW of new renewable energy projects starting in 2024. 

  • Round 4 Projects: SPPC has awarded power purchase agreements for the 1,100 MW Al Henakiyah and 400 MW Tubarjal solar projects.
  • Round 5 Projects: The procurement process for the fifth round of projects is underway and includes several large-scale solar PV initiatives:
    • Al-Sadawi solar IPP (Eastern Province): 2,000 MW
    • Al-Masa’a solar IPP (Hail): 1,000 MW
    • Al-Henakiyah 2 solar IPP (Medina): 400 MW
    • Rabigh 2 solar IPP (Mecca): 300 MW 

For engineers, this means increased opportunities in design, installation, commissioning, and grid integration of solar energy systems.
