Transmission lines design important points

Posted on August 26, 2023August 28, 2023 by Engr. Hamid Ali

In this post we are presenting to Transmission lines design important points. These points are from Saudi electricity company’s design, engineering, materials and construction standards. SEC follows their own standards for transmission, substation and Underground cables design and construction standards.
These important points are taken from below Standards.

  • Transmission Engineering Standards TES
  • Transmission Materials Standard Specification TMSS
  • Transmission Construction Standard TCS

Operating Areas in KSA

Saudi electricity company divide the complete region of KSA in below four operating areas.

  • Westeren operation area (WOA)
  • Centeral operating area (COA)
  • southeren operating area (SOA)
  • easteren operating area (EOA)

Below table shows the everyday and maximum design temperature for different operting areas.

Transmission lines design important points

All importants points related to transmission line design are stated below. A design engineer, QAQC engineer and other engineering discipline engineers working in KSA or planning to come to KSA shall get knowledge of the SEC standerds. The only way to crack your interview in KSA is to get awere of these SEC standerds. Below are the most important points

Definition of coastal area

Coastal Area is the area located within a distance of 100 km from the coastline for EOA and 50 km for WOA & SOA. Whereas the area beyond these limits is Inland Area. reference. PAGE 9 OF 23, 01 TMSS 01 R 03 clause 4.5.1.

Zinc Coating & hot-dip galvanization of Structures

below is the Zinc coating thickness for structures. Each area have a different requirement of zinc coating thickness
i. 130 microns, equivalent to 915 g/m2 for all structures in the coastal area
ii. 86 microns, equivalent to 610 g/m2 for all structures in the inland area
iii. All structures that lie within 25 km radial distance from the coastline in SEC-WOA and SEC-SOA network shall have protection with a duplex system (galvanizing + painting). The minimum zinc coating thickness in this case shall be 86μm before painting.

Crossing of major highways/expressways

Design engineer shall use Assembly type Single Conductor Double Tension Assembly (SCDT) For crossing of major highways/expressways when using anchor structures on 69kV to 230kV single conductor per phase transmission lines. Reference TCS-P-122.21 R1 clause 2.7 and TES P 122 04 R 03

Crossing of Transmission lines

A design/construction engineer shall use Assembly types Single Conductor Double Suspension Assembly (SCDS) and Twin Bundle Conductor Double Suspension Assembly CDS (2) on 69kV to 230kV transmission lines for overhead crossing with other transmission lines of the same or lower voltage. Reference TCS-P-122.21 R1 clause 2.7 & TES P 122 04 R 03

Transposition of Transmission Lines

All 230 kV and 380 kV transmission lines greater than 90 km in length shall need transposition at intervals along the line at points having distance as below.
Whereas, transmission lines less than 90 km in length and/or lines with delta conductor configuration may not require transposition except in extreme cases of very high load flow or very long distances (≈ 300 km & above).
i. For 90-270 km long transmission line, Single/Double Circuit Vertical Conductor Configuration one complete roll of transposition (one transposition barrel)- (two transposition structures or three sections of equal length, eachbeing L/3).
ii. For transmission line longer than 270 km, two complete rolls of transposition (two transposition barrels) (five transposition structures or six sections of equal length, each being L/6).

Recommended sizes of Ground Wires

Unless otherwise specified in the Project SOW/TS the fault current level shall be as 63 kA and 40 kA for 230kV/380kV and 69kV/110kV/115kV/132kV systems respectively. Other parameters shall be as in below table.

If you need any information or have question related to transmission lines design (380KV transmission lines ). comment your querries we will try to answer your querries.

Conductor and OPGW Greasing requirement

All conductors to be used in the Red Sea Coastal Regions of Western Operating Area (WOA) and Southern Operating Area (SOA) shall be greased as per IEC 61394 and Annexure C (figure C.5) of IEC 61089. Conductors shall also be greased if specifically ordered in the SOW/TS. The grease shall meet the following requirements in addition to those specified in IEC61394 Reference 10 TMSS 01 R 02 Amendment 01.

Insulator Strings Arrangement

Insulator strings arrangement for overhead transmission lines shall be as per below Table. reference. TES P 122 04 R03 clause 3.7.4

OHTL strings arrangement as per SEC standards TES P 122 04
