The Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) has taken a significant step toward enhancing the nation’s power transmission infrastructure by inviting bids for two major High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission projects:
- HVDC EOA-COA Link 1
- HVDC EOA-COA Link 2.
These projects are part of SEC’s broader strategy to ensure efficient and reliable electricity transfer across the Kingdom, connecting key industrial and power generation hubs.
HVDC EOA-COA Link 1: Connecting Nariyah IPP to Zulff #9064
The EOA-COA Link 1 is a groundbreaking HVDC transmission line spanning approximately 508 kilometers. Designed to operate at +/- 500kV with a load capacity of 3000MW, this dual-link system consists of two sets of conductors, a dedicated metallic return, and two Optical Ground Wires (OPGW).
The transmission line will connect the Nariyah Independent Power Plant (IPP), located near Dammam, to Zulff #9064, near Riyadh. This project is critical for transferring large volumes of electricity from the coastal region to the inland areas, supporting industrial and urban growth.

HVDC EOA-COA Link 2: Connecting Qurayyah-4/Hajer-2 IPP to Khari Industrial City
The EOA-COA Link 2 is another vital HVDC transmission project, covering approximately 466 kilometers. Like its counterpart, it is designed to operate at +/- 500kV with a 3000MW load capacity. The dual-link system also includes two sets of conductors, a dedicated metallic return, and two OPGW.
This transmission line will connect the Qurayyah-4/Hajer-2 IPP, located near Dammam, to the Khari Industrial City (KIC) #9067, near Riyadh. The project aims to bolster the power supply to one of Saudi Arabia’s key industrial zones, supporting economic development and industrial expansion.
Why These Projects Matter
The EOA-COA Links are more than just infrastructure projects. They are a testament to Saudi Arabia’s commitment to modernizing its power grid. And supporting its Vision 2030 goals. By connecting key power generation hubs with industrial and urban centers, these projects will
- Enhance Grid Reliability: The HVDC technology ensures efficient long-distance power transmission with minimal losses.
- Support Industrial Growth: By providing a stable and robust power supply to industrial cities like Khari, these projects will drive economic development.
- Promote Sustainability: Efficient power transmission reduces energy waste, contributing to the Kingdom’s sustainability objectives.
